The Nuthurst Society exists to promote community spirit within the five hamlets of Nuthurst, Maplehurst, Copsale, Monk's Gate and Sedgwick.
The Society organises social and cultural activities and aims to maintain the rural conservation of the area.
The activities are wide ranging including walks, talks, outings, parties, village clean-ups, fireworks, visits from Father Christmas, stoolball, Easter Egg hunts, and dog shows.
Nuthurst Society Christmas Party
On Saturday evening the 10th of December, seventy three of the finest amateur detectives descended upon Sedgwick Park House for a pre-Christmas black-tie dinner arranged by the Nuthurst Society under the Guidance of Rosemary Wakeham.
The evening had barely begun when a disturbing announcement was made, informing the assembled Sleuths that a murder had been committed and that, in all probability, the culprit was among the gathered throng.
No stone was unturned and not a single wine bottle remained unopened as the elegantly attired investigators set about unravelling the murder mystery and, just as the last course was being served, the assembled bloodhounds ‘ had their man’.
The murderer was revealed and carriages and coaches were called at midnight and everyone agreed that a jolly good evening was had by all. (Except the murder victim of course!)
Thank you to all everyone who helped to make this evening the wonderful success that it was.

The Nuthurst Society was founded in 1973 in order to help forge links between the hamlets of Monks Gate, Nuthurst, Maplehurst and Copsale. We now recognise the separate hamlet of Sedgwick, but originally it was considered part of Copsale. These hamlets form the more rural part of the Parish of Nuthurst.
At the inaugural meeting of the Society, attended by 60 people, it was agreed that the Society should be non-political, non-sectarian and that there should be no age limits. It was also agreed that the Aims of the Society were to promote community spirit within the area, to organise social and cultural activities, and to maintain the rural conservation of the area.
It is a non-profit making organisation, and surplus monies have been invested in community projects such as funding bench seats and notice boards. Any resident or past resident of the area may be a member, upon payment of a small annual subscription.
Until recently there was a regular Newsletter, published in the name of the Society and delivered to every household in the area, to enable residents to know what was going on. Now we have a monthly report posted in the parish magazine LINK, and there may be occasional publications from the Society in the future. The use of emails, our web site and Facebook are now providing new channels of communication for publicity, as well.
The late Major Huxford, a Maplehurst resident and whose hobby was heraldry, designed the Society’s emblem in heraldic style. Unfortunately the design was made before Sedgwick became a hamlet, and so depicts only Nuthurst, Maplehurst, Monks Gate and Copsale. The original emblem design is framed and hangs in the White Horse Pub at Maplehurst.
