The Nuthurst Society was founded in 1973 by two women in order to help forge a link between, the four separate hamlets of Monks Gate, Nuthurst, Maplehurst, and Copsale that form the more rural part of the Parish of Nuthurst. There are now five hamlets, as although always considered to be part of Copsale, Sedgwick is now officially recognised as a separate hamlet.

At the inaugural meeting of the society attended by 60 people it was agreed that the society should be non-political, non-sectarian and that there should be no age limits, and that there would be a regular newsletter delivered to every household in the area to enable everyone to know what was happening. It was also agreed at the meeting that the aims of the society were to promote community spirit within the area, to organize social and cultural activities, and to maintain the rural conservation of the area.

The late Major Huxford whose hobby was heraldry designed the society’s emblem in heraldic style. Unfortunately the emblem was designed long before Sedgwick became a hamlet. The original hangs in the White Horse Maplehurst.

The society is still going strong and still organizing regular activities throughout the year.

The activities are wide ranging including Walks, Talks, Outings, Parties, Village Clean-ups, Fireworks, Visits from Father Christmas, Stoolball, Easter Egg Hunts, and Dog Shows. The newsletter is produced three times a year and reports on past and future society events. It provides space for Local News, such as Neighbourhood Watch Updates, Quizzes, Quotes, Articles, Tricky Mathematical Problems and also provides Advertising Space mainly for local businesses.
